H. Joe Selby served as Acting Comptroller of the Currency for several months, following the resignation of C. Todd Conover, the 25th Comptroller of the Currency, and before the arrival of Robert L. Clarke, the 26th Comptroller.
Mr. Selby joined the OCC in 1954 and spent 30 years as a bank examiner, rising to the position of Senior Deputy Comptroller for Operations. He played a key leadership role in reorganizing the agency’s field operations and also served on the Treasury Executive Institute, to help implement changes arising from the Haskins & Sells study of the OCC. In 1980, Mr. Selby he was presented the second highest award bestowed by the Secretary of the Treasury, for “outstanding managerial expertise … in formulating and maintaining unusually high standards of bank supervision of 355 national banks with 2,765 branches and assets exceeding $43 billion.”
Mr. Selby was born in Ganado, Texas on December 9, 1931. The son of a state banker, he graduated from the University of Texas in 1954.
