The OCC’s Economics Department supports the agency and its mission of bank supervision through both off-site analyses of changing economic conditions, industry trends, and banking conditions, and on-site direct exam support. Staff in the Economics & Policy Analysis Department use quantitative methods to monitor banking and financial market conditions, analyze banking regulations, and ensure that banks comply with laws and regulations. Their analyses lend support to the development of the agency's supervisory strategies and actions, identification and prioritization of compliance risks, inform policy makers, and guide the design and implementation of regulations. The Data and Analytical Solution Division provides staff throughout Economics with data, analytical and technology services. The Risk Analysis Department provides direct exam support in the evaluation of models used to identify and measure credit, enterprise, and market risks. They work directly with examiners on bank exams to assess the various modeling approaches used by banks for both underwriting and managing all aspects of their business. In addition, Economics staff conduct original research on emerging issues affecting risk measurement, bank supervisory, and regulatory concerns.
