About Financial Management Internships

The Financial Management Division offers a range of competitive internships. While tailored to each student’s professional development and educational needs, all positions share the following characteristics:

  • Employees work with interns to provide them with valuable hands-on training

  • All internships are located in Washington, D.C.
 

Qualifications and Requirements

A Financial Management Internship is an ideal platform for undergraduate and graduate students from Accounting, Policy, Business Management, and other related fields to kick-start their future careers. The ideal candidate:

  • has a strong academic record
  • is self-motivated with excellent communication skills
  • is able to take on significant professional responsibility
  • is available to work at least 18 hours/week for a minimum of one year while enrolled in school
  • has a sincere interest in financial management
  • has functional knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel
  • has experience with Microsoft Visio and Microsoft Project (preferred, but not required)

Duties and Responsibilities common to all Financial Management Internships:

  • Participate in the OCC's "Quick Win" process streamlining program.
  • Enroll in Lean Six Sigma process improvement training.
  • Test and analyze key business processes to ensure the effectiveness of internal controls.
  • Attend monthly career development meetings with the Deputy CFO.
 

Potential Internships:

Below is a list of the potential internship opportunities within Financial Management. Each is accompanied by a description of the duties which are common to each position.

Acquisitions Management Internship

  • Research acquisition guidance and assist in the drafting of new internal procurement policies.
  • Construct and maintain spreadsheets to track budget allocations.
  • Maintain the MS Project Plans to track improvement initiatives throughout the division.
  • Assist in the "close-out" process of open contracts.

Internal Controls Internship

  • Document and flowchart processes in the areas of general accounting, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and financial reports preparation.
  • Finalize draft documents into a predetermined format.
  • Interview people who process transactions and document the processes based on the interviews.
  • Review, plan, and implement new OMB policy guidance for federal agencies.

Policy Internship

  • Perform requested research, edit documents, and incorporate edits from a number of people into policy documents that have been routed for comment.
  • Provide interpretations of existing policies to agency employees.
  • Provide administrative support for policy development and updates.
  • Participate in meetings with major stakeholders involved in several internal administrative policy updates;

Records Management Internship

  • Participate in record audits and evaluations.
  • Perform statistical analysis on RM Metrics.
  • Use electronic management systems to organize and track electronic records.
  • Research and understand Federal RM regulations and guidance.

Planning & Budget Internship

  • Aid budget analysts in tracking funding of each division at the OCC
  • Aid budget analysts in creating new budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

Financial Systems Internship

  • Maintain and monitor core financial and procurement systems.
  • Assist with General Ledger, Accounts Payable, and Account Receivable financial system issues.
  • Assist with system and report validation efforts.
  • Participate in the assessment of OCC's Financial Systems.
  • Assist with testing of new system enhancements.
  • Develop functional guidelines, policies, and procedures for financial systems.

Accounting Internship

  • Process deposits from customers and payments to vendors.
  • Create and reconcile accounting entries in the general ledger.
  • Test new software relating to processing receipts and payments.
  • Document new processes and procedures.
  • Communicate with both external and internal customers.

Deputy CFO's Front-Office Internship

  • Aid in developing and tracking metrics for all of Financial Management.
  • Analyze performance data for FM and compare to established benchmarks.
  • Draft analytical memoranda for the Deputy CFO.
  • Assist with special research, analysis, and drafting projects, as identified by the Deputy CFO.
